Why Silk Care Matters

A Monzoro pocket square, scarf, ascot, or cravat is built to last — but silk is a natural fibre, and like all natural fibres it rewards care. With the right routine, your accessories will keep their hand, their drape, and their colour through season after season of weddings, formal events, and everyday wear. The few minutes you invest after each occasion will pay dividends in how your pieces look five, ten, and twenty years from now.

Washing Silk Accessories

Whenever possible, prefer hand washing over machine washing for silk pocket squares, scarves, ascots, and cravats. Fill a clean basin with cool water (never warm or hot) and add a small amount of mild detergent — ideally one labelled for delicates or silk. Submerge the piece and gently swish it through the water for one to two minutes. Do not rub, twist, or wring the fabric, as this can damage fibres and distort the cut. Rinse with cool water until all detergent is gone, then press out excess moisture between two clean towels. Lay flat to dry, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.

For minor marks, spot-clean with a soft cloth dipped in cool water before committing to a full wash. For stubborn stains, consider taking the piece to a dry cleaner experienced with silk.

Ironing

If your silk accessory needs touching up, use the lowest heat setting on your iron — most irons label this as "silk" or one dot. Always iron on the reverse side of the fabric, and always through a thin clean cotton cloth or pressing cloth. Never apply a hot iron directly to silk, as this can scorch the fibres or leave shiny marks. For lightly creased pocket squares and scarves, hanging in a steamy bathroom for ten to fifteen minutes is often enough — no iron required. When in doubt, skip the iron and steam instead.

Storage

How you store your accessories between wears matters as much as how you wash them. For silk scarves and large pocket squares, loose rolling is gentler on the fibres than tight folding, as it avoids permanent crease lines. Store rolled pieces in a breathable cotton or muslin bag — never a sealed plastic bag, which can trap moisture and cause yellowing. Keep them in a cool, dry drawer or wardrobe, away from direct sunlight which fades dyes over time.

For ascots and cravats, hang on a padded hanger or roll loosely. Avoid placing heavy items on top of stored silk.

Caring for Metal Accessories

Lapel pins, cufflinks, tie clips, and tie bars need a different kind of care. After each wear, wipe the metal with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to remove skin oils and any moisture. Store metal accessories in a lined jewellery box, soft pouch, or the original Monzoro packaging — keeping pieces separate prevents scratches. Avoid contact with perfumes, hairsprays, and lotions, all of which can dull finishes over time. For pieces with plated finishes, a gentle polish with a jewellery cloth every few months will keep them looking as sharp as the day they arrived.

Caring for Wool Scarves and Other Materials

Wool and wool-blend scarves benefit from airing out after each wear before being folded and stored. Use a sweater shaver to remove any pilling. Hand wash with a wool-safe detergent when needed, lay flat to dry, and store with cedar or lavender sachets to deter moths. For cotton and linen pocket squares, machine washing on a delicate cycle is usually safe — but always check the care label first.

Quick Do's and Don'ts

  • Do hand wash silk in cool water with mild detergent.
  • Do iron silk on low heat through a pressing cloth.
  • Do store accessories in breathable bags, away from direct sunlight.
  • Do wipe metal accessories with a soft dry cloth after each wear.
  • Don't wring, twist, or scrub silk fabric.
  • Don't use bleach or harsh detergents on any Monzoro piece.
  • Don't store silk in plastic bags or in damp areas.
  • Don't spray perfume directly onto scarves or pocket squares.

Long-term Care for Wedding Season Accessories

Wedding season puts your accessories through their paces — long functions, warm halls, and hours of wear. After each event, give every piece a quick once-over: wipe metal accessories, air silk pieces overnight before folding, and spot-clean any marks while they are fresh. Once the season ends, do a careful inspection: wash silk pieces that need it, polish metal accessories, and store everything cleanly until the next round of invites arrives. With this routine, a single Monzoro silk scarf or pocket square will see you through many years of barat, valima, and mehndi celebrations.
